Breeding stock

This ancient breed dates back to the mid-1600s. Their distinctive downward curved bill gives them a "Roman Nose" appearance. The origin remains unknown to this day. The breed nearly faced extinction in the 1980s, with only 15 birds remaining. Conservation efforts were initiated after collecting the last 15 birds. The breed was imported to the U.S. in the 2000s by Dave Holderread.
I've been working with this breed since 2018, and it's taken time, patience, and perseverance to establish a flock. I've experienced my share of challenges, including broken eggs, poor hatching rates, and uneven sex ratios. This year, however, all my birds have the proper hook and head shape. I'm looking for someone who shares my passion and respect for this breed to continue with my birds and establish their own flock. The birds will be shown in 2025, and I'll also have hatching eggs available. I recommend using a broody duck or hen to hatch the eggs, as it can significantly improve the hatching rate. This breed is notorious for poor hatching rates, so using a hen can be beneficial. Birds typically lay eggs from mid-February to June, unless they become broody. Subsequently, they take a break from laying during the late summer months. Following molting, hens in their first laying season will continue to produce eggs until daylight hours decrease. Notably, these eggs are greenish-blue in color.

Adults occasionally for sale. Due to my relocation, I am limited in the number of birds I can have. However, I am now offering the option to reserve my 2025 breeding stock. Every year, I replace my current flock with their offspring. I have two trio pens, which means all six birds may be available. However, I sometimes keep a hen or two for specific traits or plumage color.
